As investors close the book on another financial year, it’s time to ask where they could have done better. The answer is often the same. “Investors need to understand not only the magic of compounding returns, but the tyranny of compounding costs,” wrote John Bogle in 2012.

Data from Adviser Ratings for 2022 show average fees of $4250, or 0.58 per cent of average funds under advice of $726,000.

“An adviser can add 3-5 per cent to the value of a portfolio through tax minimisation, better portfolio construction and centralising costs of investments,” says Adviser Ratings founder Angus Woods. “On a $500,000 portfolio, $4000 [to an adviser] is a pretty good investment.”
